"If I Break"

                     AUTHOR PORTIA MOORE INTERVIEW

Today, folks, we have with us one of my favorite writers and authors of the If I Break series, Portia Moore. First, let me say we do share a last name, but no way did it influence why I love her books so much. She is an extraordinary writer, and I have much respect for her talent.

So now, with further ado, Author Portia Moore.

                                                      BIO

I'm obsessed with blowing kisses. I guess that makes me a romantic. I love books, cute boys, and reading about cute boys in books. I'm infatuated with the glamour girls of the past: Audrey, Dorothy, Marilyn, Elizabeth.

I'm a self-confessed girly girl, book nerd, food enthusiast, and comic book fan. Odd combination, huh? You have no idea...

I love your bio. Does this sum you up fairly well?

                                                    SYNOPSIS

Fresh off a broken heart, I met Cal Scott.

He was just what I lacked: a beautiful distraction.

At six-foot-two, with ebony hair, storm gray eyes, and a smile that

could only hide an agenda, I knew he was trouble. And for the first

time in my life, a little trouble was just what I needed.

No. What I wanted.

It wasn’t like I’d ever marry the guy.

 Until I did.

What I thought would be my happily ever after was only the beginning.

Cal has a secret. One that makes loving him come with a price, and

being his wife costs more than I bargained for.

So, let's talk about the players in this book.

We have Lauren, waitress/artist/mother to Caylen, her daughter, and she is really confused about what is taking place in her life right now. She’s only been married to Cal for a short while, but she is fed up with him disappearing for long, unexplained intervals from her life.  There is an explanation for it, but before we reveal the answer to all her questions, let me mention Chris and Collin, the other two, and an intricate part of this amazing story.

Let’s start with Cal since we know he’s Laurens husband. He is also complicated, or multifaceted, I should say.  But before we dive into his character, let's talk about the backdrop of the story.

We know Lauren is a waitress, or was before meeting Cal, but she is also an artist who wants to pursue a career in her chosen field someday. All this changes once she meets Cal. They have a whirlwind romance that leads to marriage and a daughter.

This story is so well written. I had no idea what was going on until Lauren discovered Cal was leading a double life, or at least what she thought, until she went to Michigan searching for him due to a newspaper article one of her friends showed her after Cal left abruptly without any explanation other than that he had to go away.

So now let’s talk about what she discovers when she visits Cal’s childhood home.

Christopher Calvin Scott suffers from a disorder called Dissociative Identity Disorder, commonly known as Multiple Identities. I think I was first introduced to this disorder when I saw the movie Sybil, starring Sally Field.

We learn that Chris has suffered a traumatic event in his life that shuts him down and forces out the other personalities inside him.

Cal seems to be the more dominant or alpha of the group. He has more control than Chris and the third person, Collin. Chris is sweet and complacent, whereas Collin is the more level-headed one. But Cal pops in and out at will and is stronger than they are.

So now that we’ve talked about the book, let's discuss why you wrote about DID. Is it personal or simply a subject you wanted to shed light on?

I thought it genius how you weaved the story around these characters suffering from something they didn’t even fully understand.

My heart moaned for Lauren, caught in the crossfire of this dilemma. Here she is with a child and a husband who morphs from one person to another, with very different personalities from his alter egos.

How do you help her maneuver through the chaos of her life and this story without giving anything away until the end of the first book?

Everything about this story seemed so realistic, as if it could happen to anyone. I felt the angst and the terror. The heartbreak and betrayal, but somehow you managed to explain each event and keep us engaged throughout the series.

Book one, If I Break, two, Almost Broken, and three, Beautifully Broken. And let's not forget book four, If I Break Shattered, told from Cal’s perspective.

Loved the series, on my list of re-reads. I recommend it as one of the top must-reads in romantic fiction with a touch of mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy.
