The Importance of Book Lending and Its Benefits

Have you ever listened to the lyrics of “When You’ve Been Blessed” by Pattie Labelle? Well, that song says a lot. It speaks volumes about the importance of sharing blessings and material things like books.

Okay, the song has nothing to do with book lending, but we can certainly understand the significance.

We take having access to books for granted, but many countries and cities bear limitations.

It’s hard to imagine that in the 21st century, but it's factual.

In a world where information flows at the speed of light, it’s easy to forget that not everyone has the same privilege of easy access to books. In many countries and cities around the globe, the limitations on access to books are a stark reality even in the 21st century. However, there is a solution that has stood the test of time and embodies the spirit of sharing and community: book lending.

The benefits of book lending extend far beyond just the joy of reading. When you share a book, you’re not just passing along words on pages; you’re passing along knowledge, perspective, and a gateway to new worlds. These are only a few reasons why book lending holds immense value.

1. Book lending is a resourceful tool that can empower individuals by providing them with knowledge and insights they might not have access to otherwise. By lending books, you enable others to expand their horizons, learn new skills, and gain fresh perspectives. This empowerment has a ripple effect that can lead to positive change in communities.

2. Book lending is pivotal in fostering a love for reading. When someone borrows a book, they can explore different genres and authors, discovering what resonates within them. How do you spark a lifelong passion for reading? It’s super simple, book lending.

3. Lending books is more than just a transaction; it’s a gesture of goodwill that builds connections within communities. Sharing books opens up conversations, encourages dialogue, and creates spaces for individuals to connect over shared interests. It strengthens the social fabric and fosters a sense of belonging.

4. Book lending is not only economical but also aids sustainability and limiting resources. Instead of buying new copies of books, pass them on so that they benefit multiple people. I’m not a tree hugger, but if we can save a tree, why not, folks? Here’s a tip: Ebooks work well through lending, also.

5. Books often carry cultural heritage and historical significance—book lending extends cultural stories, traditions, diversity, heritage, and experiences preserved through generations.

6. Learning doesn’t stop after formal education. Book lending encourages lifelong learning by making educational resources accessible to people of all ages. It’s a reminder that there’s always something new to discover and explore, no matter who or where you are.

7. Keep in mind, books are vehicles for imagination and creativity. When someone reads a book, they visualize the characters, settings, and scenarios in their minds. By sharing books, you’re igniting the spark of imagination in others and encouraging them to create their mental landscapes.

In conclusion, book lending is a beautiful tradition transcending time and technology. It bridges gaps, creates bonds, and uplifts communities. So, the next time you consider passing on a book that has touched your life, remember that you’re not just passing on a story – you’re passing on the opportunity for growth, connection, and positive change. As the lyrics of “When You’ve Been Blessed” remind us, sharing is a blessing in itself, and the world could certainly use more of that. So, let’s keep the pages turning and the stories circulating – in doing so, we’re passing on the gift of knowledge and inspiration to those who need it most.

     Jerimiah's New Beginning"

Since July 2013, WTVC Newschannel 9 morning/noon anchor Greg Funderburg has been helping Chattanooga viewers start their day. And during that time, he has become a viewer favorite for his vibrant personality and lively approach to storytelling. He was voted Best of the Best TV Personality by readers of the Chattanooga Times Free Press and Best TV Personality in Chattanooga Business Elite’s Black Excellence Awards in 2021.

Before joining the WTVC news team, Greg was a reporter and fill-in anchor with the FOX affiliate in Greenville, South Carolina. The veteran broadcaster has also made stops at other stations throughout the southern region, including Columbus, Georgia, and Birmingham, Alabama. At age 17, Greg started his television career as a morning host with The Abrams Broadcasting Company in Sylacauga, Alabama.

Aside from his civic duties in media, Greg enjoys speaking to youth about the importance of getting an education, setting goals, and remaining optimistic. In his free time, Greg loves watching scary movies, traveling, working out at the gym, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Holding memberships with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and The National Association of Black Journalists, Greg has a mass communications degree from The University of Montevallo and resides in Chattanooga.

I get up early on weekdays to tune in to Good Morning Chattanooga because you’re one of my favorite newscaster personalities.

I respect that, first and foremost, in ways I don’t need to say aloud.

Secondly, I admire your wit and sense of humor because you are a master of many trades and a master of all.

Congratulations on your new book, Jeremiah’s New Beginning.

It makes perfect sense that you would branch out as an author with your journalistic background. So the writing foundation is already there.

What inspired you to take the next step of becoming a published author?

Is there a reason you chose the children’s genre?

In my opinion, when you possess the ability to write and tell stories, it should be about something that makes a profound difference in the world.

The introduction to the story begins with Is Jeremiah’s School Strange?

Can you tell us why that question is so important?

Here’s an interesting statistic. Since 2014, racial disparity in children’s books has continued to grow, but at a slower pace than in other cultures. According to ABCgo.com

I, too, feel it’s essential for children to see themselves depicted positively in a world filled with negativity.

How do you think the gap can be closed? Or do you think it can?

Now, I quote: “If Greg can do it, I can do it.”

Your opinion matters to me, so for all the other writers who want to write specifically children’s books. If the divide is too great for that to matter, why do it?

Finally, what lasting impression would you like to leave with the audience and up-and-coming authors?

Thank you for being part of Book Chat today, and please share with the listeners where they can find your book and more information about the author.

Jeremiah thinks his new school is STRANGE! The teachers rap in the halls. They dance in the gym and think it’s okay not to sit at desks. Even more shocking is the big surprise waiting for him at lunch! But is Jeremiah’s school as strange as he thinks? Or could there be a mystery waiting for him to uncover?

We’ve all experienced a new school and all that came with it.

About the Author

For nearly 20 years, award-winning television journalist Greg Funderburg has strived to be a role model and show children that if a little boy from little Sylacauga, Alabama, could grow up and follow his wildest dreams, they could too. As I’ve read to the kids in countless libraries and schools, I’ve noticed many of them were shocked to see me since they had few African American male teachers. The positive representation was also noticeably absent in the books I read to them. Greg has created Jeremiah, a young African American boy, to be a hero in his community. Through him, other children can see themselves and feel empowered to take the message of health and wellness home to the entire family. I’m striving to create something that all elementary school kids can identify with while they learn a lesson that helps create stronger, happier, and healthier families. Jeremiah’s New Beginning is a new beginning for us ALL.

                     AUTHOR PORTIA MOORE INTERVIEW

Today, folks, we have with us one of my favorite writers and authors of the If I Break series, Portia Moore. First, let me say we do share a last name, but no way did it influence why I love her books so much. She is an extraordinary writer, and I have much respect for her talent.

So now, with further ado, Author Portia Moore.

                                                      BIO

I'm obsessed with blowing kisses. I guess that makes me a romantic. I love books, cute boys, and reading about cute boys in books. I'm infatuated with the glamour girls of the past: Audrey, Dorothy, Marilyn, Elizabeth.

I'm a self-confessed girly girl, book nerd, food enthusiast, and comic book fan. Odd combination, huh? You have no idea...

I love your bio. Does this sum you up fairly well?

                                                    SYNOPSIS

Fresh off a broken heart, I met Cal Scott.

He was just what I lacked: a beautiful distraction.

At six-foot-two, with ebony hair, storm gray eyes, and a smile that

could only hide an agenda, I knew he was trouble. And for the first

time in my life, a little trouble was just what I needed.

No. What I wanted.

It wasn’t like I’d ever marry the guy.

Until I did.

What I thought would be my happily ever after was only the beginning.

Cal has a secret. One that makes loving him come with a price, and

being his wife costs more than I bargained for.

So, let's talk about the players in this book.

We have Lauren, waitress/artist/mother to Caylen, her daughter, and she is really confused about what is taking place in her life right now. She’s only been married to Cal for a short while, but she is fed up with him disappearing for long, unexplained intervals from her life. There is an explanation for it, but before we reveal the answer to all her questions, let me mention Chris and Collin, the other two, and an intricate part of this amazing story.

Let’s start with Cal since we know he’s Laurens husband. He is also complicated, or multifaceted, I should say. But before we dive into his character, let's talk about the backdrop of the story.

We know Lauren is a waitress, or was before meeting Cal, but she is also an artist who wants to pursue a career in her chosen field someday. All this changes once she meets Cal. They have a whirlwind romance that leads to marriage and a daughter.

This story is so well written. I had no idea what was going on until Lauren discovered Cal was leading a double life, or at least what she thought, until she went to Michigan searching for him due to a newspaper article one of her friends showed her after Cal left abruptly without any explanation other than that he had to go away.

So now let’s talk about what she discovers when she visits Cal’s childhood home.

Christopher Calvin Scott suffers from a disorder called Dissociative Identity Disorder, commonly known as Multiple Identities. I think I was first introduced to this disorder when I saw the movie Sybil, starring Sally Field.

We learn that Chris has suffered a traumatic event in his life that shuts him down and forces out the other personalities inside him.

Cal seems to be the more dominant or alpha of the group. He has more control than Chris and the third person, Collin. Chris is sweet and complacent, whereas Collin is the more level-headed one. But Cal pops in and out at will and is stronger than they are.

So now that we’ve talked about the book, let's discuss why you wrote about DID. Is it personal or simply a subject you wanted to shed light on?

I thought it genius how you weaved the story around these characters suffering from something they didn’t even fully understand.

My heart moaned for Lauren, caught in the crossfire of this dilemma. Here she is with a child and a husband who morphs from one person to another, with very different personalities from his alter egos.

How do you help her maneuver through the chaos of her life and this story without giving anything away until the end of the first book?

Everything about this story seemed so realistic, as if it could happen to anyone. I felt the angst and the terror. The heartbreak and betrayal, but somehow you managed to explain each event and keep us engaged throughout the series.

Book one, If I Break, two, Almost Broken, and three, Beautifully Broken. And let's not forget book four, If I Break Shattered, told from Cal’s perspective.

Loved the series, on my list of re-reads. I recommend it as one of the top must-reads in romantic fiction with a touch of mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy.

Tell everyone how to contact you and buy your books.

Living Your Best Life As An Author

Today’s Episode isn’t just for authors, but for all creators - you know who you are.

If you define the word exceptional, it means being beyond measure — standing out because you are the best at what you do. But how do you reach that level? How do you earn the title of exceptional author in a world full of talent, competition, and creativity?

The truth is, being exceptional isn’t something that happens overnight. It’s not luck, and it’s not a title you simply claim — it’s one you earn through dedication, perseverance, and passion. Every word you write, every story you tell, and every lesson you learn along the way contribute to that growth.

Believe in Yourself

To live your best life as an author, you must first believe in yourself. Confidence is the cornerstone of success. If you don’t see the greatness within you, how can you expect others to recognize it? Believe that your voice matters, that your stories have value, and that your journey — no matter how long or winding — is leading you toward something truly remarkable.

Be Consistent

Next, consistency is key. Exceptional authors show up even when the motivation fades. They write through the doubt, edit through the frustration, and keep pushing when no one else is watching. Showing up for your craft every day is what separates dreamers from doers.

Live Your Passion

Finally, live your passion — not just through your writing, but through your life. Embrace opportunities to grow, to connect, and to share your gift with the world. Your words can inspire, heal, and transform lives, but only if you allow them to.

Remember, being exceptional doesn’t mean being perfect — it means being purposeful. It means striving each day to be better than you were yesterday. So, live boldly, write passionately, and never stop believing in the power of your own story.

Because the path to being exceptional begins with one decision — to live your best life as an author.

Author’s Note

Thank you for joining me for this empowering discussion.

What It Takes To Be a Great Writer

No one had to tell you that you were a writer. The realization didn’t arrive with confetti or applause—it came quietly, naturally, like a truth you had known all along. Writing isn’t something you choose; it’s something that chooses you. And when you know, you know. But knowing you’re a writer is only the beginning. Becoming a great writer? That takes something more.

Owning Your Craft

Great writers don’t just write—they study writing. They pay attention to words, rhythm, structure, and emotion. They read widely, revise deeply, and push themselves beyond their comfort zone. Mastery isn’t luck; it’s labor like an expectant mother who toils and endures hours of death-defying pain to bring forth what she’s created and is well worth the wait. When you know your craft, you understand that every sentence carries weight, and every paragraph must earn its place.

Confidence in Your Voice

There comes a point when your voice clicks—when you stop trying to write like someone else and embrace your unique style. That’s when the magic happens. A great writer doesn’t seek permission to speak—they trust what they have to say. Confidence isn’t arrogance; it’s certainty born from practice and authenticity.

Discipline Over Inspiration

Inspiration is beautiful, but it’s unreliable. Greatness grows in the routine, in showing up when it’s hard, when the words feel tangled, and the story feels stuck. Real writers write on the days they don’t feel like writers. That’s where growth happens—beyond excitement, within commitment.

Learning Without Ego

To be great, you must be both a student and an artist. You revise. You accept critique. You improve. Ego says, “I’m already good.” Excellence asks, “How can I be better?” Knowing your stuff means knowing there’s always more to learn.

To this point, John Grisham stated that you should know how the story will end before you write the first words. I agree with that. He learned a good lesson from his wife when writing his latest book: not to have a weak ending, and his team agreed. That, to me, says a lot about checking your ego at the door and listening to others, even when they aren’t writers.

Leaving a Mark

Great writing doesn’t just tell a story—it leaves a fingerprint. It makes readers feel, think, and remember. When you know, you know: writing is a calling, and storytelling is your gift. But greatness? Greatness comes from what you do with it.

So, what does it take to be a great writer?

It takes knowing who you are, perfecting what you do, and never stopping until your words speak louder than doubt.

When you know… You don’t just write. You create.

Now go be great!
